Spartan education

When there is a conversation about education, the famous catch phrase “Spartan education” is involuntarily recalled. What events is associated with this definition? Who needs Spartan education, and is it necessary for humanity in general in the modern world?

The phrase “education in Spartan” has deep roots. Sparta is an ancient Greek state in which, in fact, this phenomenon originated. In Ancient Sparta, the main task of mothers was to raise endurance, the will to win, and patience in children.

From a young age, children were prepared for serious trials. And in order to consolidate the skills of true warriors and show successes, they had to participate in special festivities in the temple of Artemis Orphia.

Even living conditions had their own characteristics. Sleep on hard reed bedding, intense physical training, severe education. Spartan children were deprived of affection and attention, unlike modern children, who are often spoiled.

Literacy was not given so much importance, children were taught only its necessary basics. And, for example, oratory was devoted most of the time. Inattentive speakers with a lack of eloquence were pointedly ridiculed.

Over the years, the upbringing became much more severe: the children were cut off their hair, taught to walk barefoot, as a rule, without clothes, reed was collected without the help of knives, the guys participated in various competitions. And what is the most paradoxical, not only boys but also girls were brought up like that!

If the thoughts of a modern girl are busy with looks, career successes, and personal life, then the Spartan girls did not even dream about it. They were more concerned with issues related to discus throwing, wrestling, running and other competitions.

Children in Sparta were in the undivided ownership of the state. Immediately after birth, they underwent a thorough search. Weak and crippled were thrown into the abyss from the Taygetsky rock.

For his era, Spartan education was effective. Today, one does not need to conquer someone’s territory, one does not need to constantly defend oneself from the attacks of enemies, so in our time, Spartan education is generally inappropriate. However, the moments of Spartan education, namely the care for strong physical development and fortitude, are important at all times.

To raise a child in the spirit of Sparta, you, parents, must adhere to the following rules.

7 rules for raising children in Spartan:

1. Do not swaddle the child, do not create greenhouse conditions for him in the room. Inoculation of Spartan skills began from the first days of a child’s life: they were never confused in infancy, and when he was growing up, he was weaned from fear of darkness and loneliness.

2. From the first days of the life of your child, form his correct posture. To do this, start introducing the child to physical education as early as possible, make sure that he does morning exercises, plays outdoor games, learns to swim, and sat at the table correctly, preparing lessons. Already from infancy, Spartan children were accustomed to military dressing, the family laid the foundations of the main qualities of the future defender of the state, which were to distinguish the Spartan from representatives of other nations – strength, endurance and willingness to overcome life difficulties.

3. If your child’s health allows, as soon as possible, write him to the sports section, where, under the guidance of experienced trainers, he will physically and spiritually develop. At the age of 7, Spartan boys were taken from their families and placed in special state educational institutions. There they were brought up by warriors who became famous for their courage on the battlefield and from whom the children could take an example.

4. Temper your baby and do not forget that the sun, air and water are your first helpers in this important process! Hardening should not begin when the child is already sick, but from a very young age, and should be carried out constantly or not at all.

5. Do not refuse the help and advice of the older generation in the process of education. Parenting was the business of the entire Spartan community. Often, military leaders and statesmen conducted discussions with children on moral and political topics, were present at competitions.

6. Have your child practice music and dance. True, the Spartans were engaged in music and dancing not for the development of musical and dance abilities. The weapon dance performed by the young men was more like a combat exercise. Its elements were attacks, jumps, defensive tricks and lightning strikes – that is, everything that a warrior needed during a battle.

7. Educate the child in the desire to constantly improve their intellectual, cultural and physical level. In Sparta, only after 30 years the law ended the process of public education, as this age symbolized the achievement of full physical and moral development for both sexes.

The education of girls in Sparta was not much different from the education of boys.
